The Purpose of Machine Shields

CNC lathes may create an environment in which its parts must be protected from its work processes, yet need to move without obstruction. The close proximity of moving parts often excludes the feasibility of static protective enclosures.

Machine shield covers are used to guard machine ways, guides, and linear rails from contaminants like dust, chips, coolant, and other debris. They help to extend the lifespan and performance of machinery by preventing damage to critical components.

Types

There are various types of covers,  flexible cover designs that can roll-up, bend, and flex to allow unrestricted movement through a dynamic range of motion.

1. Flexible accordion bellows covers are the most flexible for adaptation to high speeds and smooth-gliding applications. They are available in varying shapes, size, and materials including elastomer-coated fabrics, thermoplastics, and coated aramid fibers.
2. Round bellows covers are used for machine screw ways guard, effectively protect the lead screw, light screw, shaft, column and other parts from dust and other special pollution and damage.
3. Rolling curtain shields are capable of high-speed operation and are also available in many material options. They are ideal for travel paths with space obstructions that preclude deeper cover profiles.

7. Wall type machine shields provide vertical protection for the machine, and meanwhile, the shield can move follow with the drill bit.

Machine Cover Shields Design Considerations

Tell us about your application requirements such as:

• Dimensions about the cover you need or the machine guide rails, better with a drawing
• Temperature conditions including ambient temperature and nearby heat sources
• Exposure to environmental threats such as dust, oils, acid, coolant, weld spatter, etc
• The speed (velocity and acceleration) of the cover and frequency of cycle
• Load-support requirements (e.g., walk-on surface for inspection or maintenance, heavy chip load, or protection from dropped tools)
